Guys, let’s be honest. Some of us have a spare tire going on. And then some of us have a spare Chevy around the middle. We’re fat men. It happens to the best of us. Obviously it’s not something we like, but we are what we are. What we need to be though, if we can’t be skinny, are healthier fat men. Seems like an oxymoron, but it’s totally possible. Here are some great tips on ways those of us who shop in the Big Boys section (or at the Big Boys restaurant!) can work out and regain some of our health.
1) Work out with a buddy. One fat man working out alone is kind of sad. We get stares. People frown at us as we pound the treadmill into oblivion. Two fat men though and people assume we’re both dieting and trying to lose weight. They smile at us and think nice thoughts. Working out with a buddy is a great way to not only get in a good workout, but also to avoid the looks from the skinny people.
2) Wear appropriate attire. We bounce when we work out . Sometimes we bounce in ways that men just aren’t supposed to bounce. I’m not saying we should all run out and buy sports bras, but by the same token wear a comfortable t-shirt that is large enough to not be form fitting when you sweat. You won’t be as self-conscious of your shape and that will make you more likely to work harder.
3) Your shoes will make or break you. Let’s face it, our legs just weren’t meant to take the pounding of a 5’8 280 pound body trying to run. You NEED good shoes to absorb the punishment and not transfer it back into your bones when you are working out . Trust me, as a fat runner who’s had multiple simultaneous stress fractures, it is very unpleasant. Go to a good shoe store and get fitted with shoes that are right for the type of exercising you are going to do.
4) Work out when it’s cooler. We sweat… a lot. Try and work out in the cooler points of the day, or in a climate controlled area. Your body will thank you for it, as will all the people around you if you’re not running rivers of sweat all over their nice workout machines.
5) Most importantly, drink water. Too many of us don’t drink enough plain old H2O. No, that Double Venti Mochachino you had at breakfast doesn’t count. Fat men working out need water and lots of it. It helps your blood flow, keeps you cooler, settles your stomach, and in general just keeps your body going. Don’t skimp on the water just to try and keep the pounds lower. You will suffer for it.
Obviously these are just simple tips , but they make a world of difference when you first start to work out as a fat man. Keep them in mind and you’ll go far. Certainly farther than from your lounge chair to the refrigerator.
